Probably one of the most frequently asked questions I get when I tell people that I build WordPress websites is, “Why do you use WordPress?” Especially after completing a front-end engineering bootcamp and dabbling in several back and front-end computer languages, as well as using other website builders, what is it about WordPress?
For starters, over 37% of the internet is powered by websites built on WordPress. As with most things in the computer world, the more users you have, the more options there are available. This means there is a lot of flexibility using WordPress, as there is a builder, plugin, or widget to help you do just about anything that you want your website to do.
The other part of this is that WordPress is an open-source project. What this means is that any developer has access to WordPress code and can build themes, plugins, and can even become a contributor to WordPress’s code itself. WordPress has built an impressive community that spans the globe and is welcoming to all levels of developers and users.
WordPress itself is free. There are no fees that you have to pay in order to run your website on WordPress. You will need a domain name and web hosting in order to run your website and those are the typical recurring charges. One time fees would be for things like a premium theme and certain plugins. This makes it easy to expand the functionality of your website over time.
Last but not least, WordPress can be used by novice users as well as experienced developers. I always say if you can learn to use Microsoft Word or Powerpoint, you can learn to use WordPress. The “backend” of WordPress is fairly intuitive and makes it easy for non-coders to add their own content, such as images, copy, pages, and blog posts. At the same time, WordPress gives developers full access to the code so that styles and functionality of a WordPress site can be enhanced to give you a customized site to fit your needs.
